SAILBATTENS — BREAKING RECORDS: The America’s Cup might have departed from NZ shores but staff at C-Tech Ltd are still flat out building sail battens. Over the last 3 months a record number of CT Sailbattens have been manufactured, mostly bound for the European market. There is a steady supply of battens to multi-hulls, racing maxis, and super yachts. |
MULTIHULLS — ORMA
60s Battens on board ORMA 60 multi-hulls Geant and Sergio Tacchini performed well last year, particularly in offshore races (Jacques Vabre and Route du Rhum). This year Groupama has been added to the CT Sailbattens list. A new set of smaller, slightly softer battens has been designed for the new Decision 35 multi-hull class that will race on Lake Geneva. |
OPEN 60s —
S-Glass In addition to the standard full-carbon product an S-Glass / Carbon combination batten has been developed for use by offshore racers and high performance maxis. This combination batten is particularly suitable for round the world racers like Open 60s (Ecover, Sill, PRB) and Volvo 70s. |
| RACING
MAXIS ‘Pyewacket’ and ‘Morning Glory’, the two canting keel Z86 maxis launched at the end of 2003, are both are using sets of CT leech battens in 3DL mainsails. CT Leech battens are manufactured with an S-Glass tip blending into a full-carbon back section. The battens have the same hollow, tapered shape as CT’s full length battens. Both yachts are using a softer set of battens for
inshore racing and a stiffer |
more durable set for
offshore races. Lining up at the Heineken Regatta in St Maarten Morning
Glory came out the winner.

SAILBATTENS FOR SUPER YACHT — TIARA AND BURRASCA C-Tech’s latest set of super yacht battens has gone onto the brand new 54m sloop ‘Tiara’, just launched in New Zealand. With a bottom batten length of 18.6m this is the largest set of CT Sailbattens built to date. Tiara, built by Alloy Yachts, is the largest super yacht to be built in New Zealand. She is capable of carrying 2200 sq metres of downwind sail on a carbon mast that weighs 7 tonnes. With a total batten length of 73.3m, Tiara carries more battens than many ketch-rigged super yachts. |
Several sets of CT Sailbattens have been built
for use on Perini Navi super yachts. Burrasca, a 56m ketch was launched in
October 2003 from the Perini Navi yard in Italy is now on her maiden world
voyage. |

MULTI-HULL MADNESS: CHEYENNE’S RTW ATTEMPT Steve Fossett’s 125 ft catamaran ‘Cheyenne’ (ex ‘Playstation’) has crossed the finish line at Ushant (NW France) 58 days 9 hours 32 min and 45 sec after starting their Round the Word attempt on February 9th. They beat the previous record, set in 2002 by Bruno Peyron’s catamaran ‘Orange’, by a massive 5 days 23 hr and 4 minutes. However all did not go smoothly on the build-up to this world record attempt. During Cheyenne’s delivery voyage from the USA to England a mid-Atlantic phone call went out: ‘Help – we’ve just broken half our battens. Can you supply something that wont break for our Round the World attempt? We need them in England in 3 weeks time’.
With Christmas Day and Boxing Day included in the 3 week time-frame the pressure was on for C-Tech to design, manufacture and ship a set of battens from Auckland (New Zealand) to Plymouth (England) by 1 January 2004. The 125 ft catamaran with a fixed (non-rotating) mast has always been notoriously hard on battens. Not only did C-Tech have to design battens suitable for a Round the World record attempt, they also had to survive in a mast/sail combination where other products had already failed. Although the existing hollow tube product was still intact for battens #5 and #6 something stronger was required for the upper half of the sail where stress loads are far greater. A custom set of CT Sailbattens was manufactured with a 50mm rectangular-to-round luff end conversion to fit into the existing mainsail receptacles. In just under 2 weeks the battens was ready to dispatch, arriving in Plymouth on 30th December. At one stage, Cheyenne had a lead of over 2200 miles over their mythical rival - previous record holder 'Orange'. Gear failure (forestay, mast track front beam, but not battens!) eroded Cheyenne’s considerable lead over their mythical rival until they were only 1000 miles ahead of the ‘Orange’ time with the doldrums to come. However the crew on board Cheyenne continued to drive the big catamaran hard right up to a hard-pressed, reefed-down finish on 5th April. Brian Thompson - Co Skipper/Watch Captain (Maiden II, Ecover, Cheyenne) comments on CT Sailbattens: ‘I have used C-Tech battens on Maiden II, Ecover and now on Cheyenne. I
have always been impressed with their lightness, stiffness and the quality
of the construction. Having broken my fair share of battens and spent
countless hours pulling them in and out of enormous mainsails, it’s great
to find a product that stands up to the 27,000 miles of abuse of a RTW
voyage.’ |

Mari Cha IV: West to East Trans-Atlantic Record The crew of Mari Cha IV were very happy with the reliability and performance of CT Sailbattens during their record-breaking Trans-Atlantic crossing in October 2003. Mike Sanderson had this to say: "Just wanted to thank you for your efforts in creating the mainsail and
mizzen battens for Mari Cha IV’s successful Trans Atlantic record run. It
can now be said that they are the fastest keelboat battens |
in the world after having survived a 525 mile 24 hour record
run as well as taking over two days off the Atlantic record. C-Tech has just supplied another set of battens for Mari Cha IV’s delivery sails and a set of hollow jib battens. |
